He watches a car pull away with someone else's bride in it, and asks how far you plan to follow it.
Zubair Ali Tabish performs a set of ghazals that move between the funny, the devotional and the plainly heartbroken, often inside the same few minutes.
He opens on a connection with the divine so close that even a thought gets heard. Then a verse about caged birds that turns kindness inside out, arguing that feeding something you've imprisoned isn't the same as caring for it. He reaches for the potter and the clay to work through his own making, and lands on the confusion of it.
There's a sharp, funny one about the weight of evidence against him and a lawyer who has taken care of the judge. Then the ring, returned, and the mark that stayed on the finger after it went. A newer ghazal on friendship and timing, where fate arrives shaped like a window. And a closing thought on being easy to reach without being cheap, wanting doors left open while knowing perfectly well how to come in another way.
He mentions his father in one verse, on inherited fear, and stops mid-performance to acknowledge Mukesh Alam in the audience.
