Munawwar Rana: The Poet Who Brought "Maa" Into the Ghazal | Rekhta Rubaru
"I didn't know the difference between a Hindu and a Muslim until I was 14. All I saw was my father driving a truck."
In this rare and intimate episode of Rekhta Rubaru, the legendary Munawwar Rana opens up about the untold chapters of his life in a candid conversation with Moid Rasheedi.
He reflects on his original name, Munawwar Ali, and how it takes him back to his roots before the fame. He talks about the 1947 Partition and why his father refused to migrate to Pakistan, choosing to stay and look after the 500-year-old graves of their ancestors. He shares the story of failing 6th grade, being sent to work as a labourer for a day, and how failing to carry four bricks taught him a lifelong respect for manual work.
He also explains his revolutionary choice to place Maa at the centre of the Urdu ghazal, a genre long reserved for the Beloved, and recalls his years in Kolkata during the Naxalite era, his rebellious phase, and the moment his father's illness pulled him into the family business.
