Urdu Hai Jiska Naam | Danish Husain on Poetry, Power and Resistance at Jashn-e-Rekhta
.
Urdu gave poets a voice, journalists a weapon, and reformers a way to reach ordinary people.
In “Urdu Hai Jiska Naam,” Danish Husain brings Urdu’s literary history to the stage through dastangoi, poetry, and humour. Drawing on a script by Sohail Hashmi, he follows the language through Sufi shrines, trading towns, royal courts, classrooms, and newspapers.
The journey connects Amir Khusro, Mir Taqi Mir, Ghalib, Iqbal, Premchand, Manto, Ismat Chughtai, and Faiz. Along the way, Husain explores Hindi and Urdu’s shared roots, Delhi and Lucknow’s literary cultures, the upheaval of 1857, Partition, and the Progressive Writers’ Movement.
Named verse works discussed include “Sehr ul Bayan,” “Kadam Rao Padam Rao,” “Qutb Mushtari,” “Tutinama,” “Saif ul Muluk o Badi ul Jamal,” “Padmavat,” “Ramcharitmanas,” “Bikat Kahani,” “Gulzar e Naseem,” and “Masnavi e Jihadiya.” Musical and poetic references also include “Kitab e Nauras,” “Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua,” “Saare Jahan Se Achha,” and “Subh e Azadi.”
His closing argument connects celebrating great writers with supporting the language they wrote in.
Watch the full performance for its stories of cultural exchange, literary rivalry, and resistance.
