The Secret History of Thumri: From Lucknow’s Courts to Global Stages

The Secret History of Thumri: From Lucknow’s Courts to Global Stages . When the heart has too much to say and words aren't enough, Thumri begins. This is a lyrical look at Thumri, the North Indian classical form built on "nazakat and nafasat", delicacy and refinement. Born in the womb of Avadh, it blends simplicity, truth and melody into music that sounds like a secret of the heart unfolding slowly. The video traces Thumri back to the royal courts of Lucknow under Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the poet-king who sang "Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye" with tears in his eyes as he was sent away to Kolkata. It explains what sets Thumri apart from Khayal, that it's bol-pradhan, led by the words, and names its preferred ragas, Pilu, Kafi, Bhimpalasi and Desh, carried by tabla and sarangi. It also follows Thumri into cinema, through Meena Kumari's "Thaade Rahiyo" and the haunting "Kaahe Ko Byahi Bides" from Umrao Jaan. And it pays homage to the voices that gave the form its soul, Begum Akhtar, Rasoolan Bai and Siddheshwari Devi. .
