In the sixth line, "Shakhandi" played an important role in Mahabharata, "Andrew", meaning both male and female. Bhishm Patamah regarded Shikhandi a Female and refused to shoot at her.
साँप सोया हुआ है बड़ी देर से
सर्दियों की अँधेरी पिटारी में कुंडल सा लिपटा हुआ
अपनी इकलौती बंद आँख खोले हुए
पिछली रुत के किसी बीन के सुर से सरशार
फन को उठाने के ख़्वाबों से दो-चार है
साँप को मत जगा, ऐ शुखण्डी ठहर
साँप एक बार बेदार हो कर उठा
तो वो आदत से मजबूर फन को उठाए हुए
आने वाले किसी सर्द मौसम तलक
बैज़वी बाँबियाँ ढूँढता
घास में जा-ब-जा लपलपाता फिरेगा
