Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency in 1975. Several human rights were violated during this 21-month state of emergency. Opposition leaders were jailed and the press was banned. Under these circumstances, a ceremony was held on August 15 at the Red Fort in New Delhi. The Prime Minister was present at the ceremony. Kaleem Aajez recited this Sher, 'daaman pe ko.ii chhii.nT na KHanjar pe ko.ii daaG, tum qatl karo ho ki karaamaat karo ho' The couplet garnered immense praise from the audiences but the organizers were left high and dry.
mere hī lahū par guzar-auqāt karo ho
mujh se hī amīroñ kī tarah baat karo ho
din ek sitam ek sitam raat karo ho
vo dost ho dushman ko bhī tum maat karo ho
ham ḳhāk-nashīñ tum suḳhan-ārā-e-sar-e-bām
paas aa ke milo duur se kyā baat karo ho
ham ko jo milā hai vo tumhīñ se to milā hai
ham aur bhulā deñ tumheñ kyā baat karo ho
yuuñ to kabhī muñh pher ke dekho bhī nahīñ ho
jab vaqt paḌe hai to mudārāt karo ho
dāman pe koī chhīñT na ḳhanjar pe koī daaġh
tum qatl karo ho ki karāmāt karo ho
bakne bhī do 'ājiz' ko jo bole hai bake hai
dīvāna hai dīvāne se kyā baat karo ho
