lai hayat aae qaza le chali chale

Shaikh Ibrahim Zauq

lai hayat aae qaza le chali chale

Shaikh Ibrahim Zauq

laa.ī hayāt aa.e qazā le chalī chale

apnī ḳhushī na aa.e na apnī ḳhushī chale

I came as life had brought me, as death takes me I go

I came not of my own accord / nor of my own I go

ho umr-e-ḳhizr bhī to ho ma.alūm vaqt-e-marg

ham kyā rahe yahāñ abhī aa.e abhī chale

had I lived / as long as Khizr, at death's door I would say

I have not stayed here long enough, I came and go away

ham se bhī is bisāt pe kam hoñge bad-qimār

jo chaal ham chale so nihāyat burī chale

few players, on this chequered board, would be less adept

as every move I make is poor / and hopelessly inept

behtar to hai yahī ki na duniyā se dil lage

par kyā kareñ jo kaam na be-dil-lagī chale

it’s better if the heart is not / enmeshed in life, it's true

what can be done, if unattached, one cannot continue?

lailā naaqa dasht meñ tāsīr-e-ishq se

sun kar fuġhān-e-qais bajā-e-hudī chale

۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔

۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔

nāzāñ na ho ḳhirad pe jo honā hai ho vahī

dānish tirī na kuchh mirī dānish-varī chale

whatever has to happen, will, don’t preen at intellect

your knowledge or my wisdom here, will have little effect

duniyā ne kis rāh-e-fanā meñ diyā hai saath

tum bhī chale chalo yūñhī jab tak chalī chale

on road to death, none in this world, would give you company

you should also move along / as long as times agree

jaate havā-e-shauq meñ haiñ is chaman se 'zauq'

apnī balā se bād-e-sabā ab kabhī chale

from this garden 'zauq' departs / with longing and with pain

for all I care the morning breeze / may blow or not again

lai hayat aae qaza le chali chale

apni KHushi na aae na apni KHushi chale

I came as life had brought me, as death takes me I go

I came not of my own accord / nor of my own I go

ho umr-e-KHizr bhi to ho malum waqt-e-marg

hum kya rahe yahan abhi aae abhi chale

had I lived / as long as Khizr, at death's door I would say

I have not stayed here long enough, I came and go away

hum se bhi is bisat pe kam honge bad-qimar

jo chaal hum chale so nihayat buri chale

few players, on this chequered board, would be less adept

as every move I make is poor / and hopelessly inept

behtar to hai yahi ki na duniya se dil lage

par kya karen jo kaam na be-dil-lagi chale

it’s better if the heart is not / enmeshed in life, it's true

what can be done, if unattached, one cannot continue?

laila ka naqa dasht mein tasir-e-ishq se

sun kar fughan-e-qais baja-e-hudi chale

۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔

۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔

nazan na ho KHirad pe jo hona hai ho wahi

danish teri na kuchh meri danish-wari chale

whatever has to happen, will, don’t preen at intellect

your knowledge or my wisdom here, will have little effect

duniya ne kis ka rah-e-fana mein diya hai sath

tum bhi chale chalo yunhi jab tak chali chale

on road to death, none in this world, would give you company

you should also move along / as long as times agree

jate hawa-e-shauq mein hain is chaman se 'zauq'

apni bala se baad-e-saba ab kabhi chale

from this garden 'zauq' departs / with longing and with pain

for all I care the morning breeze / may blow or not again
