ahl-e-ulfat ke hawalon pe hansi aati hai
ahl-e-ulfat ke havāloñ pe hañsī aatī hai
lailā majnūñ kī misāloñ pe hañsī aatī hai
I scoff at stories of sincerity
I mock the models of fidelity
jab bhī takmīl-e-mohabbat kā ḳhayāl aatā hai
mujh ko apne hī ḳhayāloñ pe hañsī aatī hai
when thoughts of love's fulfillment arise
my thoughts are a source of mirth to me
log apne liye auroñ meñ vafā DhūñDte haiñ
un vafā DhūñDne vāloñ pe hañsī aatī hai
By those hapless seekers I'm amused
That in others, look for constancy
dekhne vaalo tabassum ko karam mat samjho
unheñ to dekhne vāloñ pe hañsī aatī hai
Favours, do not think her smiles to be
she mocks them all who look on hopefully
chāñdnī raat mohabbat meñ hasīñ thī 'fākir'
ab to bīmār ujāloñ pe hañsī aatī hai
Starry nights, in love, brought me joy
I now just smile at daylight's frailty
