nala is shor se kyun mera duhai deta
naala is shor se kyuuñ merā duhā.ī detā
ai falak gar tujhe ūñchā na sunā.ī detā
why then, in a voice so loud, would have I despaired
O Heaven! if your hearing / was not thus impaired
dekh chhoToñ ko hai allāh baḌā.ī detā
āsmāñ aañkh ke til meñ hai dikhā.ī detā
God, to modest creatures, Lo / greatness does provide
in the pupil of an eye, the sky can be espied
laakh detā falak āzār gavāra the magar
ek terā na mujhe dard-e-judā.ī detā
million aches the skies bestowed, I would gladly bear
if just the pain of parting / from you too wasn't there
de duā vādī-e-pur-ḳhār-e-junūñ ko har gaam
daad ye terī hai ai ābla-pā.ī detā
you should bless the thorn filled path / of my passion's craze
O blistered feet! at every step / it showers you with praise
ravish-e-ashk girā deñge nazar se ik din
hai in āñkhoñ se yahī mujh ko dikhā.ī detā
she will drop me like a tear, one day from her eyes
with this sight of mine that is / what I can surmise
muñh se bas karte kabhī ye na ḳhudā ke bande
gar harīsoñ ko ḳhudā saarī ḳhudā.ī detā
these beings of God's creation / will never say enow
even if, to greedy ones, the world he may bestow
panja-e-mehr ko bhī ḳhūn-e-shafaq meñ har roz
ġhote kyā kyā hai tirā dast-e-hinā.ī detā
henna on your palms compels / the sun, its every ray
to submerse itself in evening's / scarlet glow each day
kaun ghar aa.ine ke aatā agar vo ghar meñ
ḳhāksārī se na jārūb-e-safā.ī detā
who, in the mirror of one's heart, would one ever see?
till it has been burnished by / graceful humility
maiñ huuñ vo said ki phir daam meñ phañstā jā kar
gar qafas se mujhe sayyād rihā.ī detā
I am that prey, who would get snared / in the net again
if freedom from the cage, the captor / ever let me gain
ḳhūgar-e-nāz huuñ kis kā ki mujhe sāġhar-e-mai
bosa-e-lab nahīñ be-chashm-numā.ī detā
I am so accustomed to her airs, that till a sign
I get from her / my lips will not / kiss a cup of wine
dekh gar dekhnā hai 'zauq' ki vo parda-nashīñ
dīda-e-rauzan-e-dil se hai dikhā.ī detā
if you wish to see then look, a veil though is between
through the window of your heart, He surely can be seen
nala is shor se kyun mera duhai deta
ai falak gar tujhe uncha na sunai deta
why then, in a voice so loud, would have I despaired
O Heaven! if your hearing / was not thus impaired
dekh chhoTon ko hai allah baDai deta
aasman aankh ke til mein hai dikhai deta
God, to modest creatures, Lo / greatness does provide
in the pupil of an eye, the sky can be espied
lakh deta falak aazar gawara the magar
ek tera na mujhe dard-e-judai deta
million aches the skies bestowed, I would gladly bear
if just the pain of parting / from you too wasn't there
de dua wadi-e-pur-KHar-e-junun ko har gam
dad ye teri hai ai aabla-pai deta
you should bless the thorn filled path / of my passion's craze
O blistered feet! at every step / it showers you with praise
rawish-e-ashk gira denge nazar se ek din
hai in aankhon se yahi mujh ko dikhai deta
she will drop me like a tear, one day from her eyes
with this sight of mine that is / what I can surmise
munh se bas karte kabhi ye na KHuda ke bande
gar harison ko KHuda sari KHudai deta
these beings of God's creation / will never say enow
even if, to greedy ones, the world he may bestow
panja-e-mehr ko bhi KHun-e-shafaq mein har roz
ghote kya kya hai tera dast-e-hinai deta
henna on your palms compels / the sun, its every ray
to submerse itself in evening's / scarlet glow each day
kaun ghar aaine ke aata agar wo ghar mein
KHaksari se na jarub-e-safai deta
who, in the mirror of one's heart, would one ever see?
till it has been burnished by / graceful humility
main hun wo said ki phir dam mein phansta ja kar
gar qafas se mujhe sayyaad rihai deta
I am that prey, who would get snared / in the net again
if freedom from the cage, the captor / ever let me gain
KHugar-e-naz hun kis ka ki mujhe saghar-e-mai
bosa-e-lab nahin be-chashm-numai deta
I am so accustomed to her airs, that till a sign
I get from her / my lips will not / kiss a cup of wine
dekh gar dekhna hai 'zauq' ki wo parda-nashin
dida-e-rauzan-e-dil se hai dikhai deta
if you wish to see then look, a veil though is between
through the window of your heart, He surely can be seen
